Skoda’s history began with two ambitious cyclists Vaclav Laurin, a mechanic and Vaclav Klement, a bookseller. In 1895, these cyclists started manufacturing bicycles and gradually moved on to motors. At the initial stage, Skoda was called Slavia to reflect the patriotism in the Czech Republic at that time. Slavia was making different bicycles and motorcycles at the Mladá Boleslav workshop. 

The logo in this era featured a bicycle wheel embedded with lime leaves, representing the Slavic nations. The company also added the names of the founders to the logo.

L&K Logo (1905-1925)

In the early 1900s, the logo featured a solid red background with the founders’ initials in the centre. The company took inspiration from the Art Nouveau style that was trending at the time. 

Furthermore, the initials of the founders are encircled by laurel leaves, a symbol of victory. This logo design survived for 25 years until it was finally updated to Skoda.

In 1925, an important event took place that contributed to Skoda’s logo evolution. The company started manufacturing cars in Mladá Boleslav under the brand name Skoda. 

The brand name changed however the design was still consistent with the old ones. The shape of the logo in this era was oval and had the brand name in centre. As seen in the prior logos, laurels surrounded the name ‘Skoda’.

According to Skoda’s official website for the UAE, in 1926, Skoda also introduced its winged arrow logo. This logo is still running but with a few adjustments in styles and colours. The origin of the idea behind this logo is still unknown. However, at times, it has been deciphered as Indian with a five-feathered headdress, credited to Skoda Plzeň’s commercial director, Tomáš Maglič.

Skoda created a new logo after Volkswagen, one of the leading automobile manufacturers, acquired it. The centre part containing the winged arrow remained consistent with a little colour change. 

The winged arrow was now light green, signifying energy and power. The circular frame around the winged arrow was made black and widened to incorporate the company’s full name ‘Skoda Auto.’

By 2011, Skoda added the elements of precision and freshness to their logo, adding a new chapter to Skoda’s symbol history. The logo did not have the brand name in the centre. This was intentional to direct the attention towards the green-winged arrow. The white background enhanced the contrast of the image. Lastly, the brand incorporated the colour grey around the black ring.

The Skoda logo’s evolution has been all about altering it to align with the company’s values and partnerships. The logo that is currently being used was based on the idea ‘Driven by Inventiveness. Clever Ideas – Since 1895.’ This reflected Skoda’s commitment to innovation and its heritage. 

The 2016 logo represented the connection with Volkswagen Group which became their new corporate identity. The major change that took place in the updated logo was the placement of the wordmark under the winged arrow confined in a silver ring.
