In the early 20th century, engines were evolving rapidly and engineers were constantly seeking ways to improve performance and reliability. One of the key challenges in high-performance engines was valve float.

It was a phenomenon where valves failed to follow the cam profile at high engine speeds. This led to poor performance and even damage to motorcycle parts such as the engine. It was caused by the limitations of the springs to close the valves, which could not keep up with the rapid movement of the valves at high RPMs.

In 1956, Ducati’s chief engineer, Fabio Taglioni, sought a solution to this problem. He attempted to eliminate valve springs and developed the Ducati Desmo Valve System. The 125 GP Desmo was the first Ducati with this system. 

By mechanically controlling both the opening and closing of the valves, the Ducati Desmodromic valves eliminated the need for valve springs. They reduced the risk of valve float and enabled the Ducati engines to achieve higher RPMs without sacrificing reliability.

How Ducati Desmo Valve System Works

In a conventional four-stroke internal combustion engine, each cylinder has one or more intake and exhaust valves. These valves are opened by a camshaft, which is driven by the engine’s crankshaft and closed by springs. 

The camshaft has lobes that push on followers, which in turn push on the valves to open them. Once the cam lobe rotates past the follower, the valve spring pulls the valve closed.

The Desmodromic system, however, replaces the spring with a second cam lobe and follower, which actively closes the valve. In this system, the valve is opened by one cam and closed by another, both of which are connected to the camshaft. This mechanical control ensures that the valve follows the cam profile exactly, both when opening and closing.

The key components of the Ducati Desmodromic Valves include:

  • Camshaft: The camshaft in a Ducati Desmo Valve System has two lobes for each valve—one to open the valve and one to close it.
  • Rocker Arms: These are the mechanical levers that transfer the motion from the camshaft lobes to the valves. In the Desmodromic system, there are two rocker arms for each valve—one for opening and one for closing.
  • Valve: The valves in a Desmodromic system are similar to those in a conventional system, but they do not rely on springs for closing.

By omitting the valve springs, the system reduces the forces to operate the valves at high RPMs for a more precise valve operation. This, in turn, offers higher engine speeds and greater performance.

The Ducati Desmodromic Valves offer several advantages over conventional valve systems, particularly in high-performance applications:

Valve Float Elimination

The Desmodromic system controls the opening and closing of valves mechanically, eliminating the need for springs. This prevents valve float at high RPMs, allowing Ducati engines to rev higher and produce more power.

Improved Reliability

One of the main drawbacks is complexity. The Desmodromic system is more intricate than conventional valve systems, requiring more components and assembly. This complexity makes maintenance more challenging and expensive.

Additionally, the Desmodromic system is only highly effective in high-performance engines. As for lower-performance applications, its benefits are less pronounced. For this reason, Ducati has primarily reserved the Desmodromic system for its high-performance models only.
