The heavy-duty vehicle line, GMC Hummer EV, comes equipped with an extract mode that enables you to raise the car nearly 6 inches above normal height to avoid obstacles such as rocks and debris in extreme terrains. It also allows the vehicle to remain dry even while fording up to 810mm of water. The Hummer EV uses the Air Ride Adaptive Suspension system to achieve this feat. 

How to Use Extract Mode

Use the extract mode in GMC vehicles by setting the drive mode control rotational dial to terrain mode.

You can only use extract mode when the vehicle is set to terrain mode on the drive mode control dial. To set it to terrain mode, use the drive mode control rotational dial located behind the gear and select terrain mode.

You will see two buttons on the dial. The top button that looks like a car with an arrow pointing upwards engages the extract mode. Press this button several times to raise the car if starting at normal mode height.

The second button which looks like a car with an arrow pointing downwards is used to disengage the extract mode. Press this button to lower the car back to normal mode height.

While raising or lowering the vehicle, a green icon will appear in the driver information centre. The arrow in the icon will indicate the direction of the vehicle in which it is moving. Be patient while using the extract mode as it might take a short while to raise or lower your vehicle completely.

Things to Remember When Using Extract Mode

Speed Limitation

While engaged in extract mode, the vehicle is limited to slow speeds. Therefore, it is recommended to only use the GMC extract mode in extreme off-roading situations.

Limited Torque

The torque delivered to the front axle of the vehicle is also limited in extract mode. Therefore, drivers must keep the change in dynamics in mind while manoeuvring the vehicle in tricky terrains.

Overloaded Vehicle

If the car is overloaded, the vehicle may not be able to reach its maximum height in extract mode. However, it will rise to the maximum possible height which might be lower than the maximum extract mode height. This prevents damage to the suspension of the car.

Overheating Air Compressor

Frequently raising and lowering the car can heat the air compressor. An overheated air compressor can not function properly and will not raise or lower your car until it is cooled. A cooling period will be required for the air compressor to work properly. It can take up to 15 minutes depending on the driving conditions.

Drive in a Straight Line

It is advised to engage in extract mode while the car is moving slowly in a straight line. This ensures a smooth transition and even application of torque.
