New Bridge on Sheikh Zayed Road to Boost Access to Mall of the Emirates

RTA Dubai has given a contract for widening the entrances to the Mall of the Emirates and the surrounding streets and intersections. In collaboration with the Majid Al Futtaim Group, this AED 165M project will also improve pedestrian and cycling lanes. The improvements will significantly reduce travel times. Case in point: travel time from the capital city and Jebel Ali to the Mall of the Emirates will be reduced from 10 minutes to just one minute. Moreover, motorists coming from Umm Suqeim will see their travel time decrease from 15 minutes to 8 minutes. These changes will enhance traffic efficiency and safety around the mall.

The project includes constructing a 300-metre bridge on Sheikh Zayed Road, now officially known as Burj Khalifa. The bridge will consist of one lane providing unrestricted access to the parking lots of the mall.

The Umm Suqeim intersection ramp is planned to widen southward. This will improve vehicle movement from Umm Suqeim Street to the existing bridge leading to the mall’s parking lots.

Additional work includes improving 2.5 km of surface roads around the mall and developing three signalised intersections. This project will also involve modifying the bus station at the Mall of the Emirates Metro Station.

The street next to the Kempinski Hotel will be converted from one-way to two-way, increasing the cycling and pedestrian lanes. RTA continuously seeks ways to enhance commuting options. One of their current projects is a 13.5 km multi-use track in Dubai, designed specifically for cyclists, pedestrians and scooters.

As for the new bridge at Dubai Mall, the improvements will cover paving, lighting, traffic signals, a rainwater drainage system and landscaping.

Launched in 2005, Mall of the Emirates, attracts over 40 million visitors annually. It hosts 96 restaurants and cafes, 454 stores featuring known fashion brands and unique entertainment venues including the largest VOX Cinema and Ski Dubai.
