Mazda CX-5 Timeline And Generations
The CX-5 is a distinguished name in the history of Mazda. Its performance, practicality and premium features make it a favourite among drivers worldwide. These factors also make it one of the most popular used Mazda SUVs in the UAE.
Here is a rundown of the Mazda CX-5 model years and iterations over time.
First generation (2012-2016)
The first generation of the Mazda CX-5 rolled out in the 2012 model year. This model combined the characteristics of an off-roader, an SUV and an MPV. Also, the initial models of the CX-5 depicted Mazda’s KODO design philosophy, which became a hit among buyers.
The former models in the Mazda CX-5 history had a swept-back look with a broad front grille in a pentagon shape. In the grille’s centre, there was a Mazda logo. What’s more, the car had plastic bumpers, fog lamps and an air intake in a trapezoidal shape. The car also featured curved taillights and curved shapes on the car fenders. Below the plastic bumper, there was a diffuser with single or dual exhausts.

The CX-5’s interior took inspiration from a sports car. It featured a binocular-styled instrument panel with a speedometer in the middle. Moreover, there was an LCD screen for computer output and a tachometer was placed on the side. A stereo and a TomTom navigation system were also available for the first generation of this SUV. The rear folding seats had a 40/20/40 split ratio.
The first-generation Mazda CX-5 was available in three 2.0-litre engine options. Two of them offered all-wheel drive (AWD) with 160 hp, one with a 6-speed automatic and the other with a 6-speed manual transmission. The third variant featured front-wheel drive (FWD) with a 6-speed manual transmission and delivered slightly more power at 165 hp.
First Generation Facelift (2014-2015)
The Mazda CX-5 history had its first facelift for the 2016 model year. The SUV received major exterior upgrades such as a new front car grille and new headlamps. New side scoops complemented the front bumper and were flanked by horizontal slats. The CX-5 also received new light-alloy wheels. Varying with the trim level, LEDs were added and the tailights came with clear lenses.
On the inside, the vents were covered with aluminium trims. The car also featured Mazda’s HMI system. The facelifted version also got a parking brake with a push-pull button.

For the engine, the CX-5 offered four petrol and six diesel engines. There were two 2.0-litre Mazda SKYACTIV-G AWD versions with 160 hp, one with a 6-speed automatic and one with a 6-speed manual transmission. A 2.0-litre FWD version was also available with a 6-speed manual and slightly higher power at 165 hp. For more performance, there was a 2.5-litre SKYACTIV-G AWD model with a 6-speed automatic transmission producing 192 hp.
Second Generation (2017-Present)
The second generation of the Mazda CX-5 history came out in 2017. The car had already made a name for itself in the relevant segment and was well-received for its design.
At the front, the design featured sleek LED headlights and modern fog lights. The rear stood out with bold, sharp-looking LED taillights. From the side, the CX-5 had a shape similar to BMW’s SUVs. However, the sloping rear windows suggested that the backseat headspace might be a bit tight.

The current CX-5 features rear AC vents, remote keyless entry and many features that add to the ride experience. It also has a 6-speaker system and Bluetooth connectivity. The cabin comfort is further enhanced with premium fabric seats and power windows with a one-touch system.
Under the hood, there is a 2.5-litre SKYACTIV-G 4-cylinder engine in the Mazda CX-5, which generates 188 hp and 252 Nm of torque. The premium crossover has a fuel tank capacity of around 58 litres.
As for safety features, the CX-5 comes loaded with them. Some of them include the following:

- Dual Front, Side and Curtain Airbags
