MINI COUNTRYMAN FIRST GENERATION (2010-2017)

The first-generation MINI Countryman models (R60) marked the brand’s entry into the crossover SUV segment. The initial models had the iconic circular headlight design, contrasting floating roof and compact proportions. The R60 also introduced a 5-door layout and stood at around 4.1 metres in length. Optional features like roof rails and distinctive trim packages further enhanced its crossover appeal.

Inside, the R60 blended MINI’s retro design philosophy with modern functionality. The cabin had elements like the large central speedometer, which doubled as an infotainment display in higher trims. Seating was available for up to five passengers. Though rear seat comfort was modest, the interior offered a cargo capacity ranging from 350 to 1,170 litres. Options such as ambient lighting and navigation gave it a premium edge.

The first generation of the MINI Countryman history offered a range of engine options. They included turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel engines. The Cooper S and high-performance John Cooper Works (JCW) variants offered sharper handling and outputs up to 218 hp. This refreshed model in the MINI Countryman history offered seating for up to four adult passengers. The functional rear door also added to the cabin space. Besides, the rear seat could be folded for more legroom. 

The facelifted Countryman came with multiple engine options. The petrol-powered variants featured a 1.6-litre engine, with output ranging from 122 hp to 217 hp, depending on the trim level. Moreover, a 6-speed manual transmission was standard, while a 6-speed automatic gearbox was optional.  

MINI COUNTRYMAN SECOND GENERATION (2017-2023)

MINI released the second generation of the Countryman in 2017 as a five-door version. Its front fascia featured the angular headlights, the MINI logo, flared wheel arches and a horizontal grille. For the second generation, the Countryman’s roof was extended and an extra door was added to make it more family-friendly. The car also came with a single-piece liftgate that improved its functionality.

Inside, the Countryman had a classic MINI-style dashboard. It had a large round screen in the centre that showed the speed and infotainment features. In front, there was a round analogue car speedometer and a smaller panel for warning lights. The rear seats could slide and recline, making them more comfortable for passengers.

The second generation of the MINI Countryman history boasted a range of engines. These included a 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre engines, delivering varying power outputs of up to 306 hp. These MINI Countryman engine options came with a choice of 6-speed automatic, 6-speed manual and an 8-speed automatic transmission. In addition, the all-wheel drive version of the Countryman was released as ALL4.

Another facelift came into the MINI Countryman history in 2020. The front was refreshed with a new chrome grille. The headlights were redesigned to include daytime running lights around the edges and adaptive LED lights improved visibility. The lower front bumper had a new air intake and round fog lamps. Plus, black cladding around the wheels and lower body panels helped the vehicle appear sportier. 

Inside, the most important change was a new five-inch display for the driver’s instruments, first introduced in MINI’s electric version. The central area of the dashboard offered two screen size options, either 6.5 inches or 8.6 inches, for the infotainment system. Also, the front seats offered new colour choices, such as Chester Malt Brown and Indigo Blue.

The 2020 Countryman came with several engine and transmission combinations. Standard models had a 1.5-litre engine producing 136 hp and were available with either a manual or automatic gearbox. The more powerful 2.0-litre version produced 178 hp. Moreover, the John Cooper Works model offered a 2.0-litre engine delivering 306 hp paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

 A plug-in hybrid version was also available, combining a turbocharged three-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a 9.6 kWh battery. This version came with all-wheel drive as standard.

MINI COUNTRYMAN THIRD GENERATION (2024-Present)

The 2024 version of the MINI Countryman history marks a bold step forward for the brand. As the largest MINI ever made, it caters to drivers who want a premium compact crossover. The updated Countryman C showcases angular headlights with LED daytime running lights and an octagonal car grille. Rugged elements like silver skid-plate-style trim, black wheel arch mouldings and unpainted bumpers give it a more outdoorsy vibe. At the rear, Union Jack-themed LED taillights and piano-black pillars add a distinctly British touch.

The car’s interior also features a 9.4-inch circular OLED touchscreen. This display controls navigation, media and vehicle settings. In ALL4-equipped models, real-time data from the drivetrain system works in the background to enhance safety and performance, especially on slippery or uneven roads.

The latest Countryman features a mild-hybrid powertrain that combines a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine with a 14 kW electric motor assist. Paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, the system offers smooth power delivery and improved fuel efficiency. The ALL4 version adds intelligent all-wheel drive and improves handling on wet or rough terrain.
