His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai just gave the green signal for the construction of the first aerial taxi vertiport in Dubai near Dubai International Airport.

The Road and Transport Authority (RTA) will oversee the governance of the port. Additionally, it will look after the integration with other modes of transport. Joby Aviation, a US-based specialist in aerial vehicles will look after manufacturing, port operations and passenger movement. Whereas, Skyports, a UK-based leader in advanced aerial mobility infrastructure development will oversee design, construction and infrastructure operations.

The service also integrates with public transportation options as well as personal transport solutions like e-scooters and bicycles. This fosters multimodal travel and enhances city-wide connectivity for a seamless travel experience.

The model houses powerful specs like six rotors and four battery packs. These give the vehicle an impressive range of about 161 kilometres. Moreover, the Joby S4 has a maximum speed of 321 km/h. The vehicle has a seating capacity of four including the pilot and causes lower noise pollution compared to conventional helicopters.

Initially, the air taxis will cover areas near the Dubai International Airport like Palm Jumeirah and Dubai Marina

For the initial phase, the taxis will operate from four strategic locations near the Dubai International Airport, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Marina and Downtown Dubai. The air service will significantly reduce travel times for the residents. For instance, a trip from Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah will take approximately 12 minutes. The same trip by car takes 45 minutes.
